THE GLOBAL GAMES MARKET WILL REACH $108.9 BILLION IN 2017 WITH MOBILE TAKING 42%

Sensor Tower and SEGA Networks have partnered together to provide the 2016 Mobile Gaming Trends Report, which covers trends throughout the gaming industry.

The report was compiled from analyses of the mobile gaming market, which includes games in 2016 that generated at least $250,000 in a single month on either iOS, Google Play, or both.

Strategy, Casino, and Puzzle games were the top three categories that gamers indulged in. Pokemon GO was found to be in possession of a significant share of the market that it wrested from the Strategy category. However, as the year went on, Strategy began to recover, and Pokemon GO began to see a decrease in revenue.

iOS, despite having a smaller share of the market, generated the majority of the 2016 revenue. iOs accounted for $3.5 billion of the market, while Google Play only had $.27 billion during the year.

Clash Royale, Pokemon GO, and Lords Mobile topped the list of game launches for the year. On its own, Pokemon GO was responsible for 37% of downloads out of all the Top Ten games for 2016. Furthermore, 7 of the 10 games were licensed IP or Expansion Game IPs.

MZ held the title of #1 publisher for the year, which saw $518.5 million in revenue generated from Game of War and Mobile Strike.

Original IP games dominated the mobile gaming market, as opposed to Branded IP games. However, Branded IP games experienced a much stronger growth.

The top 200 games for the year generated an estimated 6.6 billion in revenue. The top five games accounted for 28% of the total revenue, despite being only 13% of the total downloads.

The #1 game for the year was able to secure an average of $43.2 million per month in net revenue. The 100th spot only saw an average of $1.0 million per month.
